Surrounding area and history ...

The Threshing Barn lies in the heart of Stocks Farm, Privett. Stocks Farm is a family run, 750 acre working arable farm situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. John Dalton has farmed Stocks Farm all his life and in 2005 he and Emma Bird renovated the c1750 Threshing Barn. Well situated, being within easy access of the towns of Winchester, Petersfield, Portsmouth and Basingstoke, it is an ideal place to stay for business guests. The train connection to London Waterloo (approx 65 mins) is Petersfield, which is only six miles away and Portsmouth is merely 30 minutes drive away.

Stocks Farm is within the area of the newly created South Downs National Park, and is within a stone's throw of the famous South Downs Way. Our extensive network of local footpaths makes for many charming and interesting walks in an exceptionally beautiful area. Guests staying with their horses are welcome to make use of the farm's 70 jump cross-country course. The bridleway infrastructure is outstanding and you can ride for miles with few roads to cross. For cyclists there are both road rides and a network of 'BOATS'. There is a wealth of local gardens, which seasonally open to the public.

There are many places of interest to visit such as Portsmouth, full of Naval history, Jane Austen's House in nearby Chawton, the steam railway Watercress Line which starts in the charming town of Alresford, Gilbert White's House and the Oates Museum in Selborne. On the way to Winchester is the historical site at Cheesefoot Head where General Eisenhower addressed his troops before D-Day. Also locally is the spot where Winston Churchill, General Eisenhower and the War Cabinet met for a top-secret meeting before that famous address. The City of Winchester provides military museums, and its majestic Cathedral is breathtaking. The statue of King Arthur overlooks the main high street from one end while his renowned round table is housed at the other. The high street is filled with excellent shops and restaurants. Over the border in Sussex is Chichester and its historic Cathedral , picturesque Bosham and its ancient church and, of course, Goodwood, famed for both motor racing and horse racing. Finally, nearby Petersfield is a charming and relaxing market town which has its own distinctive air of individuality and is unique in that it is wholly within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the East Hampshire AONB.
